Why This Blog ??

Experiencing a kidney ailment is a way of life in itself. People with acute renal failure get deviated from their routine life for a while but get back in line once their fine. People with chronic renal failure get detached for good and get forcibly adjusted in a new world of their own, whether they are on dialysis or after a kidney transplant.
Few of them do adapt well, but a large chunk are left grappling for anything they can lay their hands on. This blog is an attempt to try to help those millions who may be patients suffering from the disease, their relatives, friends and well wishers, or just someone who wishes to know about the kidney and wants to contribute .... perhaps aiming to make this so-called dreadful disease not-so-dreadful anymore.

  5. Hi Dr. Ashwin,

Glad to see an online forum for this disease. I had a question pertaining to my mother. She is 67 and has been on dialysis for a little over a month (24th July, 2012). Although we see a minimal visible difference, she is still very weak and drowsy. Moreover, the fistula on her left arm (operated on April 24th, 2012) is not working (no reason cited for this despite 4 reviews) and we have been asked to get another fistula done on the right arm. Our fear is that this one may not work too. She is currently being treated by the HOD Neph in Calcutta Apollo Hosp. Please advise. Do recommend someone you think may help in Calcutta. We are really at our wit's end and would latch on to anything for hope of a better life of our mother. [Email: priya.bhattacharjee@gmail.com]

    1. Weakness and drowsiness may be due to under-dialysis, or due to factors like not being able to eat anything, having a low BP. does her weakness tend to be more after dialysis? if so then the amount of water removed should be brought down. first things first - if she is undergoing 2 times/week HD, make it 3times/week. give her all foods that she wants, make it as tasty as possible, keep no restrictions.

regarding AV fistula - if it works well, it continues well. if it doesn't, we can't do anything but create a new one. before u go ahead with the next av fistula surgery, make sure u do a arterial and venous doppler of the limb on which the av fistula is planned. it is a scan of the blood vessels which will estimate the success and longevity of the av fistula.

as regards a good nephrologist - all of them are good, and be rest assured that they would try whatever possible to help u and ur mother.
